Boys who buy jewelry... Jan 9th, 2014

Victory! Everyone slept in until about 8:30 this morning and considering my enjoying the rain
storm the night before over sleep, I was more than agreeable to the extra hours before the
day started.
Because sleeping babies in any language is priceless. (Shakira)

Worship & prayer began the day as usual, then breakfast and chores. Then it was time to

tackle the store room. To their credit nearly everyone got in on hauling out what was in there
and helping sort into piles. It was like the bottom of a toy box, everything and anything
they’ve received in the last year all mixed together and piled high. So piles of crayons, legos,
Lincoln logs, colored paper, dress up clothes, books etc… were put in boxes and bags and
will for at least a few more days be a bit more tidy. Just as we were finishing, Judith from
Kakira came to the house to arrange lunch for next week’s 5 days of ministry in the village.
I took the three oldest boys with me into town for a meeting with “Fount of Mercy” the organization
that has provided the business classes in the village over the last 2 months. Tuesday
next week they’ll receive their certificates and be ready for the next step, a group business
project and beginning their savings group. While we met, I told the three boys they could order
something to drink, but they had to read the menu and figure it out themselves, gave
them a budget and told them to pretend they were adults. They sat just outside the window at
their own table. Since Janet will be back tomorrow from a well deserved break, I suggested
they shop the block to see if here was something they might see that would be a nice gift for
her. Again, with a budget in mind, they wandered the stores and brought back a suggestion
of a pretty flashy necklace and earrings. It so reminded me of my boys, thinking they had
chosen something especially for me.
We headed home and everyone got right to creating welcome home signs while the new
batch of eggs were boiled for coloring and the gift was wrapped with fabric, oh at least a

dozen times by 4 different children before getting it just right.
I explained the idea of Easter eggs and how the egg
represented new life and also the hiding
and finding of eggs in America. They each got one egg,
wrote their name on it with a crayon
and chose the color. Brown eggs don’t color the they thought is was pretty fun to try.

Soon after, Jonathan and Regina finally were able to say “super….expialidocious”… ok well,
really, its my last night at the house and I couldn’t wait any longer, so they had a good bit of
help. Regardless, they are still watching it as I write this and giggling in appreciation even
though English for some is still very foreign and English with an English accent makes even
the most fluent strain for understanding. We paused it a bit at the beginning for explanations.
I can hear them hysterical just now over the chimney sweep dance scene. Ahh classic Disney,
you are universal entertainment!
John & Edrine
We interrupted the movie for prayer, praise & devotion time. Edrine taught, John interpreted..
I followed by talking to them about their security at Chayah and the commitments of their
sponsors and Chayah board’s commitment to them. It was eye opening to hear them say that
they feared that their sponsors might hear of misbehavior or poor school performance and
decide to stop sponsoring them. In retrospect, I can see that its only been a year, the concept
that someone who doesn’t know them or isn’t related, cares and wants to help take care
of them is pretty far out of their life experience; many broken promises by many people in their pasts.

We spent time talking about the unconditional commitment of sponsors and the board reminding
them that God chose them for Chayah and he is the most faithful always. It was difficult
to see the uncertainty on their faces, I guess only time will prove that we aren’t going anywhere
and neither are they.
