Welcome Home

January 14th, 2015

"Welcome Home!"

It’s always the last few hours that are the longest.  Our first trip of this New Year is no exception.

There was a time when my blogging audience was upwards of three and though I dreamed every last one of my friends and family might someday get to have the same adventure and experience here, I didn’t feel cautious about sharing the less than glamorous details.  The last thing I’d want is for the truth of the travel to discourage you … but after 44 hours, two vans, three shuttles, two planes and two hotel rooms we have landed ourselves right back in the pearl of Africa…and the heart of Uganda and without planning it…on the second anniversary of opening our lives and the doors of Chayah’s home.
It is worth every mile and every kink in our necks to smell the familiar smoke of a trash burn and know that we are just shy of our first full day inside the gates with 18 of our favorite people on the planet.  I won’t lie…it also helps that we are settled in between the sheets anticipating a long night’s sleep.
It’s both culturally and materially crazy-making to bounce out of the glitz of Dubai, Saudi Arabia into brick, red dirt and pot-holes.  It seems easier to be comfortable in this world where richness is defined by relationship and paradise has not yet been paved over for a parking lot.

We embraced old friends, checked into our rooms about 6:15pm, wrestled to get the phone, lamp and (thank you Jesus) air-conditioning to work.  We threw our clothes into the closet and ate dinner as the sun was setting over the Nile.

We are grateful God has granted us one more trip and for the prayer that got us here safely.
Tomorrow we celebrate with a banquet at Chayah…so for now it’s lights out!
